Event Description

Gangaur Utsav

Dr. Manisha Singh organizes the festivals of Rajasthan at a very large scale & Gangaur is one of them. The Gangaur festival is a vibrant and significant celebration primarily observed in the Indian state of Rajasthan, although it is also celebrated in some parts of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and other regions of North India. The word "Gangaur" is derived from two words, "Gana" meaning Lord Shiva and "Gaur" meaning Goddess Parvati, who are the central deities worshipped during this festival.

Gangaur is predominantly a women's festival, celebrated by married and unmarried women with great enthusiasm and devotion. The festival commences on the first day of Chaitra, the day following Holi, and continues for a period of 18 days. It culminates on the third day of the Shukla Paksha (bright lunar fortnight) of Chaitra month.

During Gangaur, women dress up in their finest traditional attire, adorn themselves with beautiful jewelry, and create intricate Mehndi (henna) designs on their hands. The festival revolves around the worship of Goddess Parvati, with women observing fasting and offering prayers for marital bliss and the well-being of their husbands.

The highlight of the Gangaur festival is the construction of clay idols of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, known as Isar and Gauri respectively. These idols are beautifully decorated with colorful clothes, jewelry, and ornaments. Women carry these idols in a procession through the streets, singing traditional songs and performing traditional dances.

The festival also features various cultural events, including folk music and dance performances, traditional competitions, and a display of local arts and crafts. People come together to celebrate, exchange greetings, and participate in the joyous atmosphere.

Gangaur not only holds religious significance but also reflects the rich cultural heritage of Rajasthan. It showcases the traditional rituals, customs, and the vibrant spirit of the people. The festival is a time of joy, devotion, and celebration, bringing communities together to honor the divine union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.
